Hooked On Phonics is a well known brand of educational materials which focus mostly on reading and spelling. It was developed by the concerned father of a young boy with reading problems in the early eighties and has been helping others ever since the mid nineties. Initially, the program consisted of flashcards and books that utilized phonics to help those using it learn to read. Today, Hooked On Phonics supplies includes items such as computer games, videos, and music as well. The original Phonics program was named “Learn To Read” and debuted in the late eighties. Most of the materials in the kindergarten edition are geared towards letters, letter sounds, and vowels. The computer games and workbook stories are designed to capture and hold the attention of the four to six year old who use it so that they are able to absorb the knowledge and develop stronger reading skills.

While computers are an excellent new way to educate toddlers and young children, not everyone has access to one in their home. This fact is one of the largest downsides to the Phonics program since most of its features are computer based.
