Technology that Helps All Children to Learn to Read
Technology that Helps All Children to Learn to Read
(PRWEB) May 4, 2005
In order to assist and encourage parents to help their child learn to read, StudyDog offers a complete set of validated early reading lessons for free. Three levels of lessons, in a video game format, are available for children from pre-K thru the 2nd grade. The free reading programs can be downloaded from the StudyDog web site (http://www.studydog.com). There is no charge for any of the reading programs. A computer with an internet connection is required.
Start early with your child
StudyDog and other leading literacy organizations say that in order to realistically and significantly reduce reading failure in the United States children need to start building sound reading skills by age 4, a year earlier than kindergarten.
ÂElementary teachers will tell you that what was taught in the first grade years ago is now being taught in kindergarten and what was taught in kindergarten is now being taught in pre-school. Children entering kindergarten today without being properly prepared in early reading skills are likely to experience failure right from the start, said Dr. Dean Arrasmith, StudyDog Chief Learning Officer. ÂThis can be avoided by having pre-school children begin a scientifically developed and validated reading program that builds early reading skills.Â
ÂItÂs important that we start teaching children to read by age 4Â, says Deme Clainos, StudyDog president and CEO. ÂIt will likely be a decade, or more, before our traditional educational system can realistically address this issue. For now, parents should take the responsibility of preparing their children for kindergarten. While it is best to start at age 4, children should be building sound reading skills not later than 6 years of ageÂ.
Too good to be true?
Can a richly animated, award-winning reading program really be free? ÂYes, absolutelyÂ, says Clainos. ÂThis is probably the most common question we hear. People simply cannot believe that the robust StudyDog reading programs can be free. But, they are. Sometimes, even after people have downloaded one or more of the reading levels, they still ask if itÂs really for free. Several thousand programs are being downloaded to parents and teachers each month.
The StudyDog reading program was developed under the guidelines of the National Reading Panel and other reading experts and has been proven to be dramatically effective. In a recent validation study, children in a St. Louis after-school program used StudyDogÂs program for 14 weeks. Initially, all children were reading below their grade level. At the end of the period, 92% of the children were reading at or above grade level. Because of StudyDogÂs technology, video game format and animation, children remain engaged for an extended period of time, allowing real learning to occur.
