Less than 30 in a public school. Actually in the olden days when I first started teaching kindergarten classes were very small and the teacher taught 2 classes for 2 1/2 hours each for a total of 5 hours of teaching a day. The teachers complained that they were over worked because they had to teach 2 classes. Now the class is 3 hours long, but there are the same number of students in the 3 hour class as there were originally in both of the 2 1/2 hour classes combined.

Most kindergarten classrooms are less than 20. A few might be as high as 25. That’s more than plenty for an energetic bunch of five year-olds.

If the aide stays all day, then 26 is manageable. With all the budget cuts and lay-offs going on, some classes are over 30, which is way too many. I suppose the teacher should count herself lucky to have a job as well as an aide.
